Polycinema 01

Winnipeg (2014)

Based on the ideas of the Bauhaus artist, educator, and theorist László Moholy-Nagy, the Polycinema attempts to create a dynamic and subjective sensorial experience within a gallery setting using multiple projected images and dynamic curved screens. As a part of the SSHRC-funded exhibition "Training for Modernity: Moholy-Nagy and the onslaught of the Digital," this project was conceived of and built with Associate Professor Patrick Harrop. Through the integration of our research interests with the expansive conceptual realm fostered by Moholy-Nagy's unrealized project, known as the Polycinema, our team embarked on a captivating expedition encompassing both experimentation and creative expression. This undertaking facilitated the exploration and realization of a proposal that originated half a century ago.

A focus of this work was on creating the surfaces that the projections would be received by and the infrastructure necessary to support the projection equipment that Professor Harrop installed in the work. This involved the construction of four screens reaching 20' tall and the suspended aluminum beams holding Harrop's projection 'tower.' To achieve this, we utilized modern tools such as digital modelling and CNC routed forms to create clear urethane armatures for the screens. These armatures were adjustable, allowing us to deform the screen on-site and create the desired screenal space within the tall gallery.
The undulating pattern of the screens and the 'pin cushion' form generated by the points of support enabled us to experiment with the subjective experience that Moholy-Nagy proposed in his description of the Polycinema. By incorporating the latest technology and embracing Moholy-Nagy's belief in utilizing it to achieve new forms and sensorial experiences, we aimed to bring his vision to life within the gallery space.
