Fabric Formed Panels

Fabric Formed Panels

Because fabric is simultaneously flexible and structural, it’s flexibility can be controlled and yet participate in the form-finding operations of casting (in this case with plaster as an analogue to concrete).

The projects shown here describe a search for a collaborative relationship with the liquid state of plaster to help acquire desired forms for panels at a 24” x 24” x 3” size. The intention was to discover a construction technique that would allow for a scaling up of this technique using concrete for use in building construction.

By using both plywood and a woven fabric that is capable of shearing in the bias direction of the weave, complex forms are made possible. The fabric that does not stretch or loose shape allows for multiples of the same form to be created from the a single form work construction.
